Futbol denildiğinde Türkiye’de ilk akla gelen isimler, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray ve Beşiktaş takımlarıdır. Bu üç takımın ülke genelinde taraftarları vardır. Diğer takımları ise ait oldukları illerde ikamet edenler tarafından desteklenir.

Özellikle üç büyük takımımızın tarafları arasında kıyasıya bir rekabet olup, bazen bu rekabet kavgaya dönüşüp insanların yaralanmalarına hatta ölmelerine neden olabilmektedir. Sporun felsefesi ile bağdaşmayan bu durum, acaba Amerika’da nasıl diye araştırdım.

Amerika’da futbol denildiğinde farklı bir oyun akla geliyor. Amerika halkının büyük bir bölümü de Amerikan futbolu hastası. Amerikan futbolunu oynayabilmek için güçlü olmak gerekiyor. Çünkü omuz omuza çarpışıyorsunuz ve rakiplerinizi elle yakalıyorsunuz.

West Virginia Üniversitesinin futbol takımını öğrenciler oluşturuyor. Muhteşem bir stadyumları var. 67 bin kişi alıyor. İki haftada bir bu stadyum tıklım tıklım doluyor. Stadın etrafı daha ilginç görüntülere sahne oluyor. Arabalar diziliyor ve içeceğini, yemeğini alan stadyum önünde piknik yapıyor. Maçları bizdeki gibi 90 dakika da bitmiyor. Maç başladıktan sonra 4 saat civarında sürüyor.

Maç öncesi muhteşem gösteriler yapılıyor. Bando takımları ve gösteri gurupları maç öncesi seyircileri coşturuyor. Stada baktığınızda rengârenk giysiler ile muhteşem bir görüntü var ve maça gelenler de çok ilginç kıyafetler giyebiliyor. Her yaştan kadın ve erkeğe rastlıyorsunuz. Belki ilginç gelecek ama gittiğim maçta, kadınların sayısı hemen hemen erkekler kadardı.

Maçları Türkiye’deki gibi canlı veren televizyon kanaları var. Maçın oynandığı gün üniversite adeta boşalıyor. Hocalar bir önceki derste “Haftaya maç var. O nedenle ders yapmayacağız” diyebiliyorlar. Maç günü olan derslerin önemli bir bölümü yapılmayabiliyor. Ancak bu kadar fanatiklik olabilir!

Maça gitmeden önce yetkililerle görüştüm ve bu sayede kameramla sahada çekimler yaptım. Çok ilginç görüntüler yakaladım. Yapılan çılgınlıkları bizzat filme aldım. Karşı takıma yapılan sesli ve görüntülü hakaretleri görünce hayretler içinde kaldım. Çünkü Elazığspor’un maçlarında türbinden karşı takımın futbolcularına yapılan küfürleri duydukça, şiddetle eleştirir ve bu durumun yalnızca bizim gibi ülkelerde yaşanabileceğini sanırdım.

Maça gelmeden önce gençlerin çoğu içki kullanıyor. Yani zaten maçtan önce özellikle gençlerin bir bölümü sarhoş, ama kesinlikle stadyum içinde alkol kullanamıyorlar.  Öğrencilerden bir kısmı ile yaptığım görüşmelerde maça gitme gayelerinin sadece maçı seyretmek olmadığını, maç vesilesi ile arkadaşlarla bir araya gelip sohbet ettiklerini, stadın dışına çıkınca da eğlendiklerini söylediler.

Seyirciler isteseler sahaya çok rahat girebilirken, asla bizde bazen yaşandığı gibi sahalara girip futbolcu dövmek gibi bir alışkanlıkları asla yok. Yani fiili bir saldırı asla söz konusu değil. Sadece ağızlarına geleni esirgemiyorlar. Futbol fanatikliği ruhlarına işlemiş. Maç öncesi ve sonrası üniversite odalarında konuşulan önemli mevzulardan biri maç hakkında yapılıyor.

Basın mensuplarına ilgi çok fazla. Basın mensupları için sahayı çok iyi gören bir konumda ayrı kapalı mekânlar yapılmış. Maç öncesi rezervasyon yapılıyor ve oturacakları yerler belirleniyor. Basın mensupları maç boyunca açık büfeden istediğini ücretsiz alabiliyor.

Maç süresince sahanın kenarında animasyon ekipleri bando eşliğinde sürekli gösterilerine devam ediyor. Bu anlattıklarım bir üniversite takıma ait olduğunu tekrar sizlere hatırlatmak isterim. Üniversitenin toplam öğrenci sayısı 25 bin civarında. Stada gelenlere bakılınca, şehir halkının da üniversite takımını ne kadar candan desteklediğini görüyorsunuz.

Kısmet olursa ileride yerel bir kanalda maçtan çektiğim ilginç görüntülerini siz okurlarıma seyrettirmek isterim. Çünkü televizyonlardan gösterilen bölümler sadece maç ile ilgili. Oysa maç süresince stadyum içinde ve dışındaki ilginç görüntüler yaşanıyor. Amerikalıların kendi il veya üniversite takımlarını desteklemek için maddi manevi yaptıklarını gördükten sonra, Elazığ’da yaşayanlar olarak Elazığspor’u çok cılız bir biçimde desteklediğimizi üzülerek belirtmek zorunda kalıyorum.

Şu ana kadar Elazığspor oldukça başarılı sonuçlar alıyor. Takımımızın maddi ve manevi desteğe şiddetle ihtiyacı olduğu bu dönemde, Elazığ’da yaşayan her kişinin üzerine düşeni yapması gerekir. Birinci lig yolunda emin adımlarla yürüyen Elazığspor’un desteğe en fazla ihtiyaç duyduğu bir dönemdeyiz. Elazığspor’u tekrar Birinci Ligde göreceğimiz ümidiyle…

POINT OF VIEW OF FOREIGN EYES ABOUT AMERICAN FOOTBALL GAMES

In Turkey, when we discuss a soccer game, we remember three famous teams:  Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas. These three teams have supporters from all over Turkey, while other teams have supporters only from the people who live in the city where the teams are from.

Very hard competitions occur between the supporters of the three famous teams. Furthermore, sometimes these competitions can result in fights that are inappropriate to the philosophy of the sport. In this article, I investigated this situation in the USA and how people deal with the football game.

American football is another game that can be compared to soccer. Some American people like football very much. To be a football player, you should be very strong physically because players hit each other with their shoulders and you catch your rivals with your hand.

The players of the West Virginia University football team are made up of the students from the university. They have a magnificent stadium that has a capacity of sixty-seven thousand people. Generally, every ticket for the game is sold for the football game, leaving very few empty seats in the stadium. The area surrounding the stadium is very fascinating. Cars, trucks, and vans park parallel to each other in massive parking lots and people have picnics there. Around the stadium they sell food; they drink alcohol with friends and celebrate the game. The American football game has 60 minutes on the clock, however, it does not end in 90 minutes like a soccer game, but can take as long as four hours.

Before the game begins magnificent pre-game shows are presented to entertain the spectators and get the audience excited for the game. This consists of a show on the field where the marching band plays music while marching in formations and the cheerleaders perform stunts. The band and the cheerleaders dress in colorful uniforms in order to stand out on the field. 

An intriguing aspect of the audience is that it is composed of people of all ages, young and old alike who come together to watch the game.  Another interesting aspect of American football is that the number of male and female spectators is almost equal. 

The game is broadcasted live on national television so people from all across the country can enjoy the game as well. Most of the games are played on Saturday; however, some games take place in the middle of the week.  When this occurs parts of the University become empty due to students getting ready for the game.  When classes conflict with the game some professors will even cancel lectures. 

I took movies of the game between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Syracuse Orangemen, which was played on October 22, 2004. I was able to film very many interesting scenes form both inside and outside the stadium. I saw some crazy behavior displayed by some of the young people in attendance.  Comments were made about the rival players and fans and some of them even used swear words. 

I met some young people before the game who were inebriated. They can not consume alcohol in the stadium because of University rules; therefore they drink before entering the stadium. After I interviewed some young spectators, I learned that some of them come to game in order to meet his/her friends and drink together and have a party near the stadium.

The other important thing that I noticed was that there was not a wire fence in front of the spectators. If spectators wanted to enter the game field, they could jump easily from the stands and run onto the field. During the game the spectators were very respectful of the rules and they remained in the stands.

Before and after the game the main topic of conversation is about game.  Before hand the students criticize different aspects of the other team and their players.  Afterwards talk about the football team continues with remarks about the game that just took place and anticipation of the next game on the schedule. 

Before and during the game the cheerleaders present their shows and the marching band beats their drums and blows their jazz. West Virginia University has about twenty-five thousand students, but there are more than 60 thousand spectators at the game. These numbers show us that the people who live in and around Morgantown are very interested to the football game, too. 

In conclusion, the American football game days are very interesting and the people celebrate these days as if they are a holiday. Every week to two weeks, this scenario is repeated and the people enjoy watching the game. But if their team loses the game, they are very upset and they behave as if they have lost a lot of money or as if they had an accident. It shows that the football celebration is a part of some American people’s life.
